Officers assigned to the Campus Life & School Safety Section (CLASS) are responsible for providing service to the six traditional high schools and fourteen traditional middle schools in the City of Oakland.
CLASS officers work with school administrators to ensure a safe learning environment on campus.
CLASS officers are responsible for the preservation of life and property, the enforcement of all laws and ordinances, and the suppression and prevention of crime in and around their assigned schools.
Each CLASS officer has the authority to enforce school–board rules and codes of student conduct in the same manner and subject to the same constitutional standards and principles as any other school district employee.
CLASS officers engage in and coordinate problem–solving activities in and around their schools in conjunction with the principal or designated administrator, School Security Officers, and other units of the Police Department.
CLASS officers give special attention to preventing and addressing problems which include but are not limited to weapons, drugs, aggression, trespass, and truancy in and around their schools
By their high visibility, CLASS officers deter crime and disorder.
