Oakland's Police Activities League (PAL) is a non-profit membership organization and is part of a larger national PAL organization that has a proud 90 year history of commitment to youth.
PAL use athletics and recreational and educational activities to instill positive life principles and character building tools in youth in an effort to deter juvenile crime and violence. The 400 children who participate in Oakland PAL programs will tell you that the experience is life altering for them.
Much is written and reported in today's news about kids at risk. Today's youth are at risk, all youth. The risk is not limited to inner–city, disadvantaged youth or to the underprivileged. All kids face difficult challenges at school, at home, and on the playing field.
PAL is dedicated to offering programs and opportunities for kids to work with positive role models and learn about success and failure on a playing field, without drugs or guns.
Through its crime–prevention programs, PAL's mission and commitment is to "Filling Playgrounds, Not Prisons."
Positive interaction between police and youth foster meaningful, long–lasting relationships that help to improve the City of Oakland. Police involvement and supervision at places of play—ball fields, classrooms, and playgrounds—engage children and help to position police officers as friends.
The PAL Center located at 98th and Sunnyside offers structured and personal guidance in a safe, friendly environment. The center is staffed by three officers well known in the community for their dedication and commitment to our youth.
The Center offers reading and computer literacy programs, cooking classes, leadership classes, a pool and ping–pong table, and, when we get them, free lunches.
Off–site PAL programs include summer camps, field trips, and a host of physical activities including archery, baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, karate, flag football, golf, track and field, tennis, and racquetball. PAL also provides activities in the performing and creative arts.
Many of the programs and activities that PAL sponsors would not be possible without the financial support and participation from our corporate sponsors and alliances with other organizations.
