In 2003, Police Service Area 6 personnel participated in a number of crime reduction efforts in partnership with the community.
In addition to community meetings, PSA 6 personnel used a Yahoo e-mail group as a supplementary method to communicate crime–related and community–building information: Crimestop@yahoogroups.com.
PSA 6 was actively involved with the International Boulevard Merchant's Association, Elmhurst Blight Committee, Webster Tract Neighborhood Association, and the Oakland Commerce Corporation.
PSA 6 implemented Chief Word's Violence Reduction Plan/Operation SAFE in two areas of high criminal activity, using a number of enforcement strategies including undercover buy-bust, surveillance, and zero-tolerance enforcement. Other units throughout the Department assisted with traffic enforcement, abandoned vehicles, and other high–visibility law–enforcement activities. Patrol Division watches provided 24–hour enforcement in target areas. Collectively, 64 offenders were arrested, 47 citations were issued, and approximately 100 vehicles were towed.
