| Cadets are hourly employees who receive training and practical work experience in various aspects of the police profession. Cadets are rotated through a variety of assignments designed to develop their interest in police work. Assignments may include blight enforcement, vehicle abatement, traffic, recruiting, training, community service, and other support areas. |
| Intensive supervision, counseling, training, and evaluation by trained police officers begin the process of preparing Cadets for leadership roles and careers in law enforcement. |
| Cadets are required to participate in physical training exercises as a condition of their employment. Cadets may work up to 19.5 hours per week. Duty schedules are dependant upon Department needs and school commitments. |
| Applicants must be between the ages of 17.5 and 20.5 and attending high school or an accredited college or university. College students must be enrolled full time. High school seniors must be registered at or accepted for admittance to an accredited college or university at the time of hire. Applicants may not have any felony convictions. Cadets must be in possession of and maintain a valid and unrestricted California driver's license. |
| To be eligible for the positron of Police Cadet, you must complete a City of Oakland application and successfully pass a written examination, oral board interview, background investigation, and medical evaluation. |
