The Public Information Officer (PIO) deals exclusively with matters related to the sharing of information between the Department and the public it serves. |

| The PIO's goal is to ensure that open lines of communication are maintained at all times with all segments of the Oakland community. | |
| The PIO is assigned to the Office of Chief of Police and, among other duties, serves as the official Department spokesperson, responding to inquiries from the media and other sources. | |
| The duties of the Public Information Officer include but are not limited to the following: | |
| • Providing a liaison to all major media outlets | |
| • Producing and disseminating all Department press releases | |
| • Coordinating Department press conferences | |
| • Facilitating all media interviews with Department personnel | |
| • Staffing the Public Information Officer position at the City's Emergency Operation Center | |
| • Coordinating all public records requests | |
| • Coordinating Department press passes | |
