The goals of the Academy are listed below:
• Encourage increased understanding of police operations.
• Enhance awareness of the Department's roles, capabilities, and limitations.
• Develop realistic expectations of Department response.
• Bridge the gap between the Department and the community by building trust, loyalty, and a sense of cooperation.
• Provide a forum for police–citizen exchange and dialogue.
Classes meet at the Police Administration Building every Wednesday evening or Saturday morning for fourteen consecutive weeks.
Participants must live or work in Oakland.
The Academy curriculum is taught by experienced police personnel and provides students with an overview of the major units and issues of citizen concern.
As part of the curriculum, participants will have an opportunity to ride with a patrol officer for a shift.
